After the adrenaline of bungee jumping and canyoning we decided to slow things down with a stroll across a glacier and a kayak through a national park. We could go on about these at length using words like amazing, spectacular and incredible but I think there's only so much of that you can take?
Instead I'll dwell on some of the more obscure and interesting things about New Zealand. First up the cows. Now, New Zealand is of course famous for its sheep but to be honest we've found the lamb here a little disappointing (and Australian would tell you that's because the Kiwis take the best ones for something else but we're not going there).
The beef on the other hand has been amazing, some of the best meat we've ever eaten. Great juicy steaks have been the order of the day either on our own barbecue or in restaurants. (Often following a starter of green-lipped mussels that are sooo huge). The meet is so good that even Katie (vegetarian of 15 years) has been tucking in. It's become something of an obsession and the cows look so good and healthy that we have taken to pointing at them in the fields and salivating "ooo that's a good one".
Another highlight of New Zealand has been the camping. Although there is a plethora of 'no camping signs' it is widely acknowledged that, wherever there isn't a sign, you can pull up and camp. There is also a chain of state run campsites that charge about 2 pound each for you to stay there. As a result we've camped in some amazing places - on beautiful beaches, by lakes, in pristine woodland.
As we are with fitness fanatics Katie and Iain, it has become the norm to have an evening or morning jog along the beach before washing off in the ocean - really quite idyllic. Although this ideal lifestyle was shattered one morning when after a lie in we wandered over the sand dunes to the beach we'd been on the evening day before, and found that something wasn't quite right. Turns out we'd accidentally (honest) stumbled onto one of New Zealand's premier nudist beaches - whoops.
So when in Rome … no not at. We're British and we kept our modesty well hidden. We did however invent a new game 'On or Off'. This involved sitting near the beach access point and as people walked onto the beach trying to guess if they were 'Onies' or 'Offies'. Would they keep clothes on or off? Unfortunately we may have got a bit carried away; cheering when someone whips off their smalls is apparently frowned upon even on a nudist beach.
Enough naked chat. When we were first planning this trip one of our must 'dos' was wine tasting in the Marlborough region. This completely lived up to expectations. We hired bikes and cycled from vineyard to vineyard tasting award winning Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris before wobbling off on our bikes to the next venue. All the vineyards were completely welcoming recognising the importance of promoting the master brand of Marlborough over their own little vineyards. We got well and truly …tipsy and had a glorious day in the sunshine, and we think we may even have learnt something more about wine - namely we like it.
