This was the Steele in the midpoint chamber of Preah Kahn. This chamber used to be lined floor to ceiling with rubys, sapphires, emerald and many other precious gems about the size of your fist. The holes in the stone wall that once held these gems still remain. The 'flame' of the candle is a deliberate hole that was created within the wall, one in each of the four directions, allowing the position of the sun to line up and 'light the candle'. The light also provided a dazzling display when reflected against the gems. It would have been a spectacular sight.
