STOP PRESS
I need to report the sighting of a kangaroos bum as it dived back into the bush as I hurtled round a tropical Queensland corner in Barbs car. I'm sure that many of you will doubt this phenomenon, but as the lovely Barb was sitting next to me (and yes, she did let me drive her car - mostly so she could imbibe….) and will if pressed, confirm said glorious occasion.
The big highlight of PD was of course catching up with Barb after 38 years…………….I said that I'd know (as would she) after half an hour of meeting whether I'd stay for a day or more. I stayed for 6 and could have stayed longer. She was and is a brilliant host and great company.A special thanks Barbs.
The time spent in Port Douglas was huge. I dived in the GBR (that's the Great Barrier Reef for the uninitiated- don't you know). In a tiny helicopter I flew across the verdant expanse that is the tropical rain forest and the GBR with an even younger pilot than ever called Nigel no less. He responded happily to my rendition of the Ride of the Valkery's and went very low over the tree tops as in the movie Acropolis Now! That famous Greek tragedy, with Martin Sheen before he got too fat, and Marlon Brando when he was really fat. All these adventures were free due to the fabulous generosity of the people I met all introduced by Barbs over the few days I was there. Thanks again guys.
As well as diving and flying I was a butler for the night and I also went kite surfing for the first time- believe me! -you can see all my sporting activities and acts of dering do in the photo album entitled 'Port Douglas'.
Right now I'm on the next epic voyage, I'm happily touring the Gold Coast from Brisbane down to Sydney, about a thousand kilometres but I have 8 days or so. Presently at Byron Bay, a pseudo hippy hang out and, to be honest I don't really get off on it. It's just that commercialisation of everything again.
Later dudes x
