The following morning (Tuesday 10th Jan) we made our way to Te Anau which is on Lake Te Anau. There is an old Maori legend which says that the lake was formed by a tribes leader's wife betrayal. Seemingly the tribe leader found a spring which he showed to his wife in secret. He told not to tell anyone. He went away hunting and after a few days she took her lover to the spring. When the lover's image was reflected in the spring, the water overcame them and formed the lake.
We went across the lake to visit the glow worm caves. These caves are made mostly of limestone and inside them are lots and lots of glow worms. Now the glow worm is actually a larvae which lives for 9 months. Their stomach are the glowing part of them. The brighter the glow, the hungrier they are. The caves are very dark and all the glow worms look like stars in the skies. They were quite amazing but close up they are really quite disgusting. The caves were awesome and had lots of waterfalls in them. I was very brave in caves - even when a drop of water dropped on me and I screamed!
That night we stayed in a park with lovely mountain views. We had a lovely BBQ and enjoyed the view with a glass of wine. We had quite an early night as tomorrow is an early start as we are going to Milford Sound.
On Wednesday morning we set off very early as we are driving to Milford Sound to catch a boat. Milford Sound is amazing. There is glaciers, waterfalls and huge mountains. It was raining when we left Te Anau and most of the way to Milford Sound. This was a good thing as the more rain the more waterfalls! When we got on the boat the clouds were starting to lift and we starting to see more. The place is amazing and the waterfalls are really tall. One of them is double the size of Niagara Falls! The boat gets really close to them - Paul got a little wet! We went out into the Tasman sea and we seen Dolphins!! We seen them 3 times - it was so awesome! We also seen more seals and as they were male they were having some "discussions" on who got to sit higher up on the rock.
After the boat trip we started to explore more of the Fiordlands and went to an amazing waterfall called the Chasm. It was quite a sight and the water was very powerful. It was one of the most amazing waterfalls I have ever seen. Back in the car park a Kea (a huge parrot which is native to NZ and has the same intellegnce as a monkey!) was sitting next to our campervan. This was a little worrying as they like to shred rubber! So once we made sure the van was ok we sent off.
We drove quite a bit to make tomorrow's drive a little easier. We stopped at Gore which is just a little town. We had another great BBQ and got an early night as we had a long day.
