Adelaide was really only supposed to be a brief stop over in order for us to get our bus to Coober Pedy which is where we are off to next. According to Mark and Lynne reaction when we said that we were off to Adelaide we assumed that it was going to be a bit of a weird place. But to our amazement it was a very nice place to spend a couple of days but you wouldn't want to live there though!
After getting over the initial shock of being back in shared accommodation in dorms of all places (this is not the style that one has become accustomed to) we left the place looking for something to do for the day. The sun was most definitely out and blazing away so we decided on doing things indoors and what better to do when its hot outside than wander around Adelaide's many air conditioned galleries. We hit the modern and contemporary art, the historical art and even found ourselves at a glass art gallery which was running an exhibition by the glass artist Tom Moore. His work was amazingly detailed and even contained some glass marionettes which had actually been used to put on a performance or two. Again the photos we took do not do the art justice but you will get the idea.
After looking around at all the artworks we had worked up a bit of a hunger so we decided that we should find a supermarket and get ourselves a cheap lunch. I decided to ask a guy standing nearby if he knew of a local shop. Just as I was asking him hi s sister pulled up in car and he told us to jump on in. They drove us through the streets of Adelaide asking us about our travels and very kindly took us to a local food hall about 10 minutes away from where we were. They dropped us off and said goodbye and we never saw them again. We were gob smacked at the friendliness of the place and tried to imagine if that sort of thing would happen in the UK… No was our answer!
The next day we were getting a bus in the evening so as the weather was a scorcher again we decided to make full use of the cities free bicycle scheme. All you do is turn up early, leave some form of ID with them and they give you a bike, lock and helmet to use for the day for nothing. Great. So we headed off to the beach for a fish and chip lunch and a 42km round trip to burn off the fish and chip lunch! As if a free bicycle was not enough we used the free bus to get back into town in the evening in order to get our night bus. We love free stuff!
Next stop… Coober Pedy… The middle of nowhere, and underground too!
