With a little chemical assistance, we got a pretty good night's sleep. The first couple of days are dicey due to jet lag...going East just kicks my ass. Trying to sleep at 1030pm here when your body thinks it is 330pm, is not easy. So, for the first few nights I take sleeping pills, then I am good to go the rest of the trip.
We went down to our complimentary breakfast in the hotel, which had wonderful meats, cheeses, croissants and yogurt. Paige was scheduled to skydive and we had been concerned that the weather might not cooperate, as a storm was heading over the Alps from Italy. Luckily, the sun was out and it was a beautiful day. So, skydiving was a go she and the guys headed for the train to Interlaken where she was getting picked up.
After relaxing at the hotel, Ken and I decided it was time to enjoy the scenery with a hike. Armed with a trail map, and advice from Roger at the front desk we hit the trail. However, after about 200 yards, we hit a fork and like the evening before tried to decide the best route, but this time had a map! Well, that didn't help much as we weren't sure if we were on the pink, yellow, pink dashed or blue trail. So, we took our best guess and went the direction we thought we should go. Turns out we were kind of on the yellow and then ended back up on the pink, with a very short excursion on the pink-dashed (it was to narrow and slippery). Bottom line, we ended at the place we planned on, so it was successful.
While we did well in finding the trail, it didn't mean we didn't have issues. Due to our long hike down last night, our legs were really sore and my surgically repaired knee was acting up. Since we are going to be on a bike for 6 days, I don't want to have knee issues so was getting a bit concerned. By the time we got most of the way back down, I was walking very gingerly and looked to be about 30 years older than I really am. Ken's legs were also sore, and we were both aggravated that we certainly didn't seem to be in as good of shape as we thought we were.
We made it to where we could pick up the train back to Murren and was surprised to see Paige heading back from her sky diving. She had a great smile on her face and loved her jump! She said it wasn't scary and the view was amazing. I tried to upload her video, but the connection at the hotel was just too slow. We were happy that she was happy, but equally relieved that she was back without incident!
Kyle and Carl were still in Interlaken, and we were starving so headed back to the little cafe we next to the gondola where we had dinner last night. The swiss have a dish called rosti, which is basically like shredded hashbrowns which they put stuff on...like vegis, cheese, sausage, etc. Yesterday Paige had tried the rosti with pears, brie and ham and she was craving it again, while Ken and I tried the one with sausage. Both were very tasty, and since we had all done quite a bit of hiking we didn't worry about the healthiness (or lack thereof).
With our carb intake for the year, it was of course time to relax our very sore legs with a swiss nap. It was perfect timing, as the weather was just starting to turn misty. After icing my knee and all three of us taking a nap, Ken and I went down to the common room to read, check emails and relax with some tea. Paige eventually joined us and we watched her sky diving video which was amazing...not only was the scenery beautiful, but she was smiling the entire time. For those on my facebook, I have shared the video...so check it out.
The rest of the day was doing more relaxing and having dinner at the hotel. We tried some raclette, which is melted cheese served with boiled little potatoes, peal onions and sliced dill pickles. Sounds wierd, but it is really good! Tomorrow's weather is supposed to be rainy, so we shall see what that means for activities as it might be a day to do more reading!
