Termites are hellishly intelligent organisms. They build these fortresses up to 4m in height and orientate the fluted sides away from the predominant sun angle to increase the cooling effect during summer. There are litterally 1000's of mounds on the Cape and one must respect these objects if contemplating driving around after the wet season in long grass. These monstrers would stop a 4WD in its tracks.
