Day 47
It starting raining really heavy last night and continued most of the day, they got 60mm of rain today. Usually this is great news as it fills up the tanks which is their only source of water. However, it is easy to see how the flash flooding that cut them off from town as the road flooded and that hit places like Toowoomba in December can happen. The ground is pretty impermeable most of the time and the water will just run off the surfaces and into creek beds unaccustomed to so much water, and it rises so fast.
We took a drive into town, across the floodways which were dry the day before and now fast flowing rivers taking the shrubs with it. The river rose remarkably quickly although thankfully this time stayed low enough not to do any damage or cut off any roads.
As a result of the really wet season they have had, the ground is really green and lots of vegetation even compared to when we were last here in November.
The kids were pretty excited and wanted to ride their bikes around in the rain. It's obvious that the girls have been living away from Ireland for some time now or they would not be as excited. We are going to freeze when we get home as if it dips below 20 degrees here we reach for out jeans and jumpers, it's funny how you acclimatise.
Overnight: Paula's house, Miles
