Well we made it. After four flights and an hour and a half in a motorised canoe we arrived at our amazing amazon Eco lodge. It's crazy hot here! Lucky too as there's no hot water so the showers are very refreshing lets say. We arrived pretty late so we had to make a mad dash in another boat to monkey island before they all swung off to bed. The light was going but we still managed to meet them. I even got a kind of handshake as one of them grabbed a bit if banana out of my hand. Made me a little worried as I did decide against the rabies shots so I decided not to let them sit on my head as others in the group had done......
The group are all really nice actually. After wondering whether we'd be the younger ones in an old group, when we met them in Lima we were glad to find out that everyone looked a fairly similar age (might be flattering ourselves here). There are several Aussies, two Canadians (one of whom is another Flight Centre on a fam trip), a Belgian couple and a pair of English guys; one from Radlett, Herts and one from Witley, Surrey. Would you believe it?! The two villages that educated me!
Lima was not what we expected either. Got a little alarmed when the guy who picked us up from the airport told us to put everything in the boot including day packs and gestured that if we didn't, criminals were likely to break into the car while we were travelling to steal them off our laps! However despite seeing areas of real poverty, there are also really affluent areas and its all so diverse! We really wished that we had more than one night to see the city. Did you know that Lima is home to the world's largest fountain park? Well neither did we. We didn't even know there was such a thing as a fountain park but now we've been there and it was pretty cool!!!
Tour highlight so far:
Those of you who know how much Pete laughed at my packing decisions will understand that a close second is definitely being told constantly how well we've done to pack so light. However the winner has to be the best night sky ever. On a canoe out in the middle of the river in the amazon jungle. Don't think I'd actually seen the Milky Way until last night!
Lowlight:
Pete says it has to be the smelly French man who took his shoes off on out 12 hour Madrid to Lima flight. That and the rubbish on board films shown on a handful of overhead screens, and me moaning about them..... Iberia aren't the best airline BTW
