If Sim city was a real place it would be Dubai. Take an empty patch of desert, unlock infinite money on cheat mode and build until your heart is content. Then populate with Arabs and Africans.
Dubai is a strange place, where culture is glimpsed on street corners but never found whole heartedly. For someone with a 12 hour lay over and £30 in their pocket, it's not really a bad place to be.
We spent the majority of the morning, immersed in gold and gems, trying to come to terms with what would be Jo's ideal engagement ring. Dubai's gold Souk would have been the perfect place for this, if it hadn't been for two reasons. #1. with no idea what we wanted and about 8 million options, we were a bit overwhelmed #2. Jo's got Delhi belly.
So after browsing star sapphires, green diamonds, blue sapphires and blue diamonds we gave up and jumped on the metro to the supermall; a shopping centre, with an aquarium! After refueling on McDonald's and taking a quick photo stop at the world's tallest building, Burj Kalifa, it was time to head back to the airport and officially, officially leave Asia.
