Kia Ora! Currently a week behind on my blog, so bare with me!
After leaving windy Wellington on Friday we boarded the 'Interislander' ferry so we could cross the Abel Tazman- the body of water between the two islands. The views of the Marlborough Sounds coming into the south island were great! We arrived in Kaiterteri early afternoon; Kaiteriteri translates loosely as 'food run quickly', apparently the locals derived from a bunch of gluttonous cowards who would grab as much food as they could and scarper off when other tribes showed up.
A couple of the guys from the bus suggested we play American football on the beach, I grabbed a fanta from the hostel and made my way to the battle-ground (unlike a certain Maori tribe ey!) Since none of us knew the exact rules we kinda made it up as we went. After a true classic my team unfortunately lost (although I did score what may have been the touch down of the match-just saying) The game was a really nice way for me to meet the guys on the bus, Hannah and a group of girls watched from the sides-what an enjoyable afternoon! We spent one extra day in Kaiteriteri which mainly consisted of 'chilling' on the beach as the sunshine wasn't much to write home about...although I guess I just did...
We did get to take a brief dip into the sea whilst the sun was out, see picture.
From Kaiteriteri we arrived late Sunday evening into Westport, a stop used primarily as a stop off for the driver as there isn't much to do there. That said we did have another great evening socialising! Our driver Rich organised a 'Killer Pool' tournament at the pub, here we met the people we would be spending the rest of the trip down to Queenstown with.
Since this post seems fairly uneventful now would be a good time to mention the beautiful scenery the south island has to offer. Whether it was the mountainous volcanic formations, waterfalls or the turquoise glacial rivers-the south island took my breath away.
I'm extremely lucky!
