So, I left you all at Nelson from my last entry.
I'm currently in a bus filled with lots of computers writing to you thru a little thing called the "Internet".
I apologise, I'm still equalising from the pressure drop that occurs after mixing a cold with a Helicopter Flight! Yes, I still have the sniffles but the worst part is over at least. I won't even mention it from now on!
Getting back to the part that matters, I took the $320.00 NZD Heli-Hike option which includes a scenic flight upto the Franz Josef Glacier and back to base. In between, we're treated to the best available Hike. For two hours we stamp, slide and in my case dip my freakin' leg into ice water whilst taking in some incredible natural landscape and ice formations.
Every part of the trip was worth it but the most incredible thing was the weather. Despite the past two days of hardcore rain and a further unsightly prediction for todays activity, the sun has been shining all day. Luck of the Irish I guess, thanks Mumsy! (Especially as you're the one paying for the Hike).
Before today, I've visited a one-horse town know as Westport. Funnily enough it's on the West Coast where it's pretty miserable and rains 2 out of 3 days. All the more reason to celebrate after my Heli-Hike went ahead (Franz Josef is also on the West-side).
After Westport we stayed in the middle of a field where an old bloke had stuck a pub alongside some convenient accomodation. Known as the "Poo" Pub beacuse of it's long un-prenouncable name that starts with the same 3 letters, it's the "Kiwi Experience" fancy dress night. Our theme was Super-hero's and I came up with the rather random idea of being "Young Nasty Man" - arch rival and nemesis of - "Wonderboy" (Tenacious D), which is where Jon steps in.
The night was average, but the venue must be making a mint. They get a guaranteed Kiwi Experience bus there 6 nights a week, every week!
Anyway, I really enjoyed the Heli-Hike today, it's been another awesome experience to add to the vast number I've already crossed off. The photo above is fresh as too, only about an hour from camera to ether!
I'm off to soak up the rays whilst chillaxing in a spa with a nice cold beer.
Until next time,
Bye Bye.
