Thursday 10th May
Up & off to catch a bus to Kyrenia/Girne on the northern coast. The bus went back towards Nicosia before turning north to cross a range of rugged mountains to the coast. Kyrenia is dominated by a huge castle which protects the small harbour full of pleasure & tour boats.
We arrived at about mid day & walked a long way with our cases before realising that we had passed close to the hotel some way before as the map didn't have the street names of many roads & alleys. The room overlooked the old harbour which was busting with tourists.
It was a day of some misfortune as d*** found the strap on his bag was hanging by a thread & Jane had forgotten a shirt In Famagusta
As we were both pretty tired we didn't set out for the castle until too late so we tried to find a path to the bus stop again & by chance stumbled on a tailor who fixed the strap for $3 while we each had a beer. Having eaten we were in bed by 8.30 although sleep was hard to come by as there was a show next door with a very heavy drum beat.
Friday 11th May
Up early to pack, have breakfast & visit the castle before getting back to catch a bus to Famagusta station & we had to lug our bags back once more. After Jane recovered her shirt we took the next bus to Nicosia, had a snack with our Turkish cash, crossed the green line & caught yet another bus to Limassol, Cyprus's second city. The ride was interesting on a fine motorway for most of the route but through a short but heavy downpour.
On arrival we found our somewhat run down but well located room & after unpacking had a welcome drink before a short Walk to the fishing harbour & a quick retreat as it looked as we were in for a violent storm which, luckily, didn't eventuate. Had an unusual dinner of green salad & fried anchovies which were quite tasty but oversize whitebait. In bed by nine.
