Now our itinerary is a bit skewed and we have a day up our sleeve. What to do? Bill wants to fish and I am happy to chill (literally) somewhere before Westport. It had been raining solidly with a big weather system coming from New Caledonia. We look on the map and see a small place, Moana, on Lake Brunner. Good fishing it says, so that's a go. Up early to get a good start to Greymouth and then half an hour inland to Moana.
The morning was wet, wet, wet with cloud and fog at road level so no sightseeing in either Fox or Franz Josef. Such a pity.
The road from Fox to Franz Josef is incredible and ethereal with the cloud and mist clinging to the road; over mountains and through gorge, with free flowing waterfalls spilling down the cliffs beside us. The green foliage, all shades of green, of ferns hanging onto the cliffs either side of the road as we twist and wind our way onward. Then down and out into a bright valley, the sun trying to shine through as the cloud has gone and there is some blue sky, with crisp clean air.
Everything in the South is clear and clean and sharp; the air and the spectacle. The van says it is balmy 12 degrees ouside, but I'm still rugged up.
We followed the Whataroa river and as we neared the township, the clouds lifted somewhat. The Whataroa river is pretty awesome so we had to stop at one point to take a video and some pics.
Surprisingly, when we got to Hokitika, birthplace of my lovely, late brother-in-law Graham Blank, it was a balmy 14 degrees. I had to buy a piece of greenstone here, for myself, in his memory. A wonderful man, taken far too soon.
Onward to Greymouth and then to Moana. We stopped at the first camp ground, but as it was 3km from the lake, decided to check out the camp actually on the lake. We did however, snap a few pics of their old bicycles before we left. I love the lawnmower bicycle. Very innovative! The original ride-on mower. Eion and Coop, just for you!
So we get to the only other camping ground which is crappy and run-down, but as it is on the lake, decide to stay. It was for sale and I can see why the grumpy old, penny-pinching b****** isn't making any money! He had the personality of a nobular-nosed gnat. He had drunk far too much whiskey all his life and his nose showed it!.
Anyway he fleeced us for twice what the place was worth, considering we had to pay for the showers too! I tried to make polite conversation with him and Bill joined us asking where people fished locally. "in the water" he said! Nobody likes a smart arse and I didn't go for this smart arse much, but we humoured him and laughed asking, like, where? 'out there' he pointed to the lake. OK you smart @@#$#$$$#. Not going to talk to you any more today, else I might smack you one!
We joined the other 2 campers and settled in for the day. I did the washing and machine drying whilst Bill fished. I said 'fished' he didn't 'catch'. Never mind there is always tomorrow, before the fishing licence runs out. Being an Australian he can only buy one day at a time! WTF is that?
Despite everything it was a great spot and we will stay another day

ronamarie Sorry it was so wet on the West Coast. That chap in Moana was his own worst enemy, wasn't he? Not very pleasant for tourists, though. Loved the ride-on mower. There are some brilliant people Rou d, aren't there. Keep the blogs coming.... Lots of love xx
Sharon Starling So lovely that you bought some greenstone in memory of your lovely brother in law and our gorgeous Uncle, Graham. A special, gentle man, never to be forgotten! We loved Moana when we went there last year, but lucky for us we stayed in the first camp ground, 3kms from the lake, and loved it there. Quiet, serene & beautiful. Sorry you got stuck with campsite on the lake with the grumpy old owner! The sooner someone takes over from him, the better! Glad you could look past him, and enjoy the ambience of Moana ... a beautiful place.
Sharon Starling Gorgeous!

Sharon Starling One of the highlights of travelling around the West Coast are the lovely lush ferns everywhere ... just beautiful!
Sharon Starling All the beautiful greens ... love it!
Sharon Starling Yes, the tannins in the water certainly change it's colour ... becomes very tea-coloured.
