Sri Lanka is gorgeous and we're really sad we don't have enough time to see it properly, but have thoroughly enjoyed our short stint here nonetheless!
Probably the most fun thing that we've done is spending a day at the Elephant Orphanage (although they're not all orphans these days) watching the huge herd of elephants playing and bathing in the river after which we managed to make it past the vendors and 'spice garden' touts and watch the babies get fed in an open-air enclosure out of enormous bottles! They were incredibly cute and we were initially a bit disappointed that we picked the wrong side to stand as they were all fed up the other end...the disappointment didn't last for long though as we realised that it was in fact us with the best view - of the screaming crowd jumping out of the way as the babies' projectile poo came flying straight at them!!!
We have also managed to get a tiny little taste of the beach - we're staying at Negombo for the last day here which is the closest town to the airport and also Sri Lanka's first 'resort'. It's pretty built-up these days but it sure beats an airport hotel - you can get bargain accommodation right on the beach and it's also a bit of a party place - we can sleep off the hangover on the way to Bangkok!!!
