Our crossing from Vietnam to Cambodia was our most adventurous border crossing to date.Phu Quoc is basically directly across from Sihanoukville so it should have been really simple but unfortunately Phu Quoc is a disputed island which Cambodia claim as part of their territory. In order to get to the border we took a motorbike taxi, a bus, a ferry and then another bus and another motorbike taxi and then the fun really began! As soon as we crossed from Vietnam into Cambodia the nice tarmacadam road disappeared and in its place was a red dirt track which was totally churned up with massive holes in it because it was bucketing down with rain! Oh and we're still on the motorbike taxi for another 60km, going at about 85km per hour - Help!! The great thing was that because this border crossing only opened to foreigners recently not a lot of travellers use it and the countryside was just breathtaking; locals ploughing their fields with oxen, beautiful wats set up on hills with paddyfields laid out like offerings below, houses made out of reeds and basically just a glimpse at the simple life of real Cambodian people in the countryside where tourism hasn't touched.
After another hour and a half in an actual taxi this time we finally arrived at our destination, Sihanoukville and met up with Sylvie and Mal, our diving buddies whom we hadn't seen since Koh Tao.Sihanoukville is a proper beach resort with little beach bungalows, complete with friendly resident frogs and geckos who pop in to say hi, lots of beach bars and restaurants serving delicious seafood barbecues and lots of adorable kids and women selling everything from massages to manicures and fresh fruit to handmade bracelets.
After a day of relaxing on the beach and eating fresh lobsters bought from the wandering sales women we headed out for a day's dive to see what Cambodian waters had to offer and we weren't disappointed. The visibility was great, although given what we'd learnt in our expectations weren't too high, and we were able to see so much further than we ever had before. We saw shoals of batfish, loads of barracudas, a few boxfish (they look exactly as they sound - square), squirrelfish, anemone fish, goatfish, groper and best of all a bright blue ray and lots of beautiful soft and hard corals! A great day's diving!
