We flew from Rio to the north coast of Brazil and arrived into the tropical paradise which is Jericoacoara. To get to Jeri we had to take a bus across the sand dunes for almost an hour. It's a very laid back beach town with huge golden sand dunes and a beach which stretches on for 37km! It's a really popular destination for surfing, kite surfing and sand boarding. Gareth rented a surf board for a day and caught a few waves, even managing to stand up! All self taught though - but it is hard work being a poor surfer as you have to spend far too much time paddling for waves and not enough time enjoying the ride!!!
It's winter up here but yet the temperatures were in the thirties every day. However it did mean that the sunset around 6pm, with the whole town heading to the sand dunes to watch it. After the sunset there's a capoeira show on the beach which was just amazing, those guys are so fast! There are no street lamps so after sundown you're walking around on the streets made of sand with just the light from local shops and restaurants to guide you. We did experience the odd thunder storm which turned the sand roads into rivers for an hour or so before returning to roads. This was a great chance to fine tune the card playing skills.
We stayed in a pousada run by an Israeli traveller and met lots of other Israelis. There are an unbelievable number of Israelis travelling in South America, basically after they do their army service they all head off travelling and by the looks of it most of them come to South America. They're a funny bunch, all doing the exact same things, constantly hitch hiking and always looking for ways to get their adrenaline pumping. Anyhow we picked up a few words in Hebrew and had a good laugh with them.
