Shutters on the inside and outside of the window make for a very dark bedroom! We woke up not having a clue if it was day or night. It was 7am so Alan decided to go for a run. Around 15 minutes later he hobbled back into the room. His hip was killing him and he'd only managed to go around 100 metres. This wasn't promising for a day of sightseeing.
We went down to breakfast where we were taunted by cereal but no milk or bowls. There was also no milk to be had with tea or coffee. That said the B&B owners were lovely but this made us laugh
We had planned to walk to the Canal du Midi, the canal that joins the Atlantic to the Med, hopefully taking a stroll along the riverbank and stopping somewhere for a drink, but given Alan's discomfort this was starting to look doubtful. Still, we set off at a sedate pace to explore.
After winding through a few pretty squares, and some not so attractive streets, we found ourselves at the canal. There really was not a lot happening on the riverbank so we took a boat trip instead. It was also a good way of enjoying the river without Alan having to walk. We were told the history of the town and canal in 3 languages all spoken live by one woman and an additional commentary was given by a Japanese Tour guide who translated on the spot. It was a very muticultural trip.
Afterwards we went back to the citadel for lunch. There is a very nice square there full of restaurants, hustle, bustle, tables and chairs. If like us you prefer a quieter environment we can recommend going off to the sidestreets for food. It's also cheaper! Alan enjoyed the regional dish of Cassoulet, while Angela went for a salad. For some reason best known to themselves the chefs here like to add fruit into every vegetarian dish. Today it was chopped, dried apricot.
We found a part of the city we hadn't seen last night, a huge church next to a pretty square, where a choir was performing. The sound was wonderful, but the moment was spoilt when they stopped to sell us all their CDs.
There wasn't much time left before we were being taken back to the airport for our flight home so we went off to buy souvenirs. There's LOTS of tourist tat here, but there is also some lovely boutiques and artismal shops that are worth looking in.
The airport is TINY! Let us say that again. The airport is TINY!!!!! You do not need to check in 2 hours early because it's you can practically touch each wall with outstretched arms (yes, we are exaggerating). We killed time writing this post, which promptly disappeared into the ether
32 hours after leaving home we were back again, exhausted but feeling like we'd had a proper holiday.
