On the road by 8.30am, and left the Oodnadatta track to head toward Coober Pedy about 6 Km's out of William Creek. The road was hard packed red sand and was almost like driving on a highway in most places.
We passed through Anna Station, Australia's largest cattle Station, part of Sydney Kidman's cattle empire. Although the cattle were few and far between.
When we made it to Coober Pedy we checked in to the Big 4 caravan park after a reference by another couple who said the old Greek guy who owns it ran an interesting tour and cooked a good pizza.
We went down the Main Street for lunch, at the Trip Advisor Top 5 restaurant in Australia, Johns Bar & Grill, it was honestly the best coffee in SA and the pizza was amazing. A minimum serve of chips was three times the size of the bowl we got at William Creek, half the price and much yummier.
We went on a tour of Coober Pedy in the afternoon with Yani (John) our tour guide. We got to see the underground house he was building, and he showed us how they drill out the rooms. A tour of some of the mine diggings and a look at their noodling machines. We then headed to the Breakaways, a lookout where several films used the landscape as the background, including Mad Max 3 and Pricilla Queen of the desert.
The tour also included an underground church and trip to the museum in an old working mine. There was plenty of opal on show throughout the town.
And we finished the day with one of Yani's pizza's, I think he's making more out of tourists than he did out of opal but you wouldn't know because as we heard a few times today miners will never tell even if the do find a big patch of opal.
