Wow, what a drive across Bighorn National Forest on US 14W. The forest range was from 4,600 feet to over 13,000 feet at Cloud Peak. I saw a sign saying it was just over 9,000 feet at that point; the entire drive over the mountain was a hard pull but it had over 10,000 photo opportunities.
After making the drive over the mountains and arriving safely at Absaroka Bay RV park, I found a very important footnote: "Cloud peak is the highest peak within the forest. Motorist pulling trailer should use caution on US14/14A". Yep, that's the route we took.
A beautiful stream, Shell Creek flowed along side the road and sparkled visibly in many areas; it was so inviting but we didn't dare stop. We did think how nice it would be to spend about a week or two on top of that georgeous mountain. We found that there were lots of campgrounds, picnic areas, foot trails, streams and lakes...all calling our name (maybe the next trip out).
After getting settled in to camp, we realized there was limited phone service and no TV; all good by us since we were there to see Yellowstone National Park and The Great Teton National Park over the next few days. Until then, happy travels.
