She was Cuba's most famous philanthropist (1845-1909). She was born into a wealthy family, bbu recognized the difference in living standards between Cuba and Europe. In Santa Clara, she founded the Teatro la Caridad, the Biblioteca Jose Marti (library), the Santa Clara train statio, four schools, a weather station, a senior citizen hoe, and the provincial gas factory. She was a humanitarian and led a campaign against hoelessness, funded the power station that gave street lighting, and developed public laundry stations which improved sanitation. She contributed 240,000 pesos (equal to millions of today's dollars) to the liberation of Cuba from Spain.
