Jesuits began construction in 1748 and continued until they were expelled in 1767. The building was finished in 1787 and the diocese of Havana was created. The remains of Christopher Columbus were brought to the cathedral from Santo Domingo in 1795 and remained there until they were moved to Spain in 1898.
