The final part of the 'group honeymoon' was spent in a holiday resort in Porto de Galinhas for a bit of R&R..hey it's tough doing all those other activities on the beach!
Porto de Galinhas itself is quite a touristy town but is historically famous for being a port for importing slaves from Africa. Even when this was outlawed, the practice continued covertly. Ships filled with slaves were hidden by loads of black chickens imported from Angola. When the boats arrived, the code for letting everyone know that there was a new boat load of slaves at port was ''the chickens have arrived''. Yes, very charming. The town adopts it's name in a very tongue in cheek way though, as around the town you see lots of statues (to call them sculptures is being generous) of comically dressed chickens. Even the phone booths are in the shape of chickens (Galinha = chicken in Portuguese).
The main activity here though was basically working on the tan and everyone seemed to go to a different level of colour intensity in the few days we were here. Oh, and there was a bit of relaxing by the pool and beach volleyball/football/waterpolo thrown in for good measure of course. A nice way to end a few weeks of fun filled action in Brazil.
Carol has been an absolute star co-ordinating everything over the last few weeks. Many a character including myself may have had a wobble on occasion when it was all getting a bit much being co-ordinator, translator, guide etc for 14 people for 2 weeks straight. She took it all in her stride though and we were all extremely grateful…Muito Obrigado!
