(Ok so im pretty sure that picture is actually from Hanoi but i'm running out of vietnam pictures!!)
Our last day in Nha Trang was spent on the beach soaking up as much sun as we good! It was lovely :). After we had some lunch though the clouds quickly moved in and they looked dodgy....we ended up getting kicked off our chairs as the guy wanted to put the cushions away. We went back to the hotel and chilled out, had a shower and then went for dinner. Jess and I shared a seafood basket which had barbequed mussels, oysters, clams, prawns, squid and red snapper - it was deeeeelish! We then stocked up on snacks for the 10 hour bus trip ahead.
We had to wait a bit and then the guy finally arrived. They seemed more controlling on this bus and forced us into specific seats. We had a good laugh at the beginning of the ride which also included Andy pissing off this french man who was complaining that "he was on holiday and wanted to relax"....not quite sure what we were doing! (Although i do believe Andy had his feet in the guys face by accident....) After making friends with the french fellow Raoul then managed to drop his bottle of water on his head....woops!
The bus journey was pretty painless. We made a stop at about 1am for the toilet...probably the worst toilets we have seen thus far. Not only did they REEK they were so dirty! And as i was walking into the cubicle a spider beat me to it....there was NO WAY i was going in there with that thing so i ran to the boys toilets which were actually cleaner!
We arrived in Ho Chi Minh at about 6 30. We'd done some research for a hotel which we eventually found. People were checking out soon so we were served free breakfast while we waited and booked our trip to the Cu Chi Tunnels which would leave in about an hour. We then got to go to our rooms for a quick shower and then headed out.
We arrived at the Cu Chi Tunnels and watched a documentary that is seriously due for an update....it was made in 1967 and is hard to understand and even make out the pictures! In case you dont know, the Cu Chi Tunnels are where the Viet Cong would live and hide during the war. There are 3 levels, the top level already being 3 metres underground. The tour around the tunnel was awesome. We had a little vietnamese guy called Ken (haha ken!) who had a great sense of humour. He was entertaining...We got to go into little hiding spots (obviously made for little vietnamese people so i had some issues getting my bum out of it! embarassing...) and then just toured around the different points. We got to see different booby traps that the vietnamese set for the americans in the tunnels....they look pretty painful! Ken then showed us his favourite one...a massive concrete ball with spikes sticking out that would fall on someones head when they walked under it - ouch!
We then were given the opportunity to go into the tunnels. They had been made bigger so that us fat westerners could fit in them! These things are TINY! There were lights every now and again but there were some pitch dark points. We had a good laugh screaming and getting a little claustrophobic. The people in front were going mega slow so we were being held up. Not fun. Most of the time we could just crouch as we walked through but there was actually one down hill part where we had to kind of crawl on our knees - pretty painful! Mum, this is something we do not reccomend for you!
Finally we made it to the light and we were all filthy and sweaty - it gets hot in little tunnels 3 metres underground! We were then treated to a cup of tea and some tapioca....kind of like sweet potato.
We then made the journey back to the city and went to the War Remenants Museum which was also very interesting although very depressing! Some of the photos were very graphic. We finally got to do our learning of Vietnamese history although all the reading got a bit tiring! We then took a wander through the city back to the hotel. It was rush hour! IIIINTENSE!!! Again, crossing the road was practically a suicide mission each time. The number of scooters going past were ridiculous and we even had scooters hooting at us on the pavement so they could miss the jams! Ridiculousness i tell you! Rather entertaining though.
Tonight is our last night in Vietnam. We have to get a taxi around 7am to the airport and then we'll be in Bangkok for two nights!
Can't believe there are 3 nights left in South East Asia :( Hopefully we'll get one last update in Bangkok!
Lots of love
