We finally pulled back into the east coast after a short flight from New Orleans to Orlando, Florida. A quick cab ride later and we were at the doorstep of our next hospitable expat host, Daniel Seeff (aka Junior).
We didn't know too much about Orlando other than people go there to see Disney World and/or Universal Studios and we had much debate about which of these we should actually go to ourselves. From what we could make out, it seems like Disney is better and more suited to young kids and Universal is better for the rest of us bigger kids. The funny thing is, though, that after all of this careful consideration and research on which one to go to, we didn't actually make it to either in the end thanks to heavy hang overs and very little sleep from helping Junior bring in his birthday. The 100 degree (fahrenheit) heat wasn't motivating us either. Turns out that giving ourselves the day off to chill was a good idea as our second night was pretty much a repeat of the first…just in a different part of town.
So we can't say too much for the town of Orlando, but it has a huge university, a great student crowd and it's a good place to feel like a "youngster" again. Oh ja, it also has Disney and Universal.
Luckily the hang overs the next day weren't too bad and were easily cured by a greasy breakfast and a cup of coffee. We say luckily, as we were back on the road and driving down to Miami with Junior. The drive was quite easy and entertaining and we didn't even realize that it took us about 6 hours to get there (as opposed to the normal 2 to 3 hours without any traffic and detouring highways). We drove into South Beach just as the sun had gone down and set up camp with our next hosts Laura and school mate Shannon.
Little did we know, Laura had a little trick up her sleeve. Being a promoter for Bacardi, she was able to get us into the best club in town, Liv at the Fontainebleau Hotel, not once, but twice, two nights in a row! On our first night in town, we headed to Liv, ate some of Grey Goose's new vodka ice creams and watched Flo Rida perform while sharing audience space with LeBron James. We thought that was pretty incredible until we arrived there the next night to an even busier hotel foyer and bigger queue for the club. The reason for this…Tiesto…live. Not only did these mlungu's get in to the club, we got in for free (perfect for a backpackers budget), walked straight to the front of the queue and walked straight into the club - us mlungus had kicked it up a notch and were partying celebrity style.
So once again, we didn't get to see too much of Miami had to offer during the day but at least this time we made it to the main tourist attraction, the South Beach beachfront.
It was a quick five days in Florida where we probably saw more moonlight than sun. But, hey, this is what the tour's about, taking each moment for what its offering - even if it means missing some of the beaten track.
Another massive thanks needs to go to Junior, Shannon and Laura for all their hospitality and going of their way to ensure that we had the best experiences in their cities. We really appreciate it!
