Nordlingen: A small town about one hour drive from Rothenburg Ob de Tauber that is nestled in a crater created by a meteor many, many years ago. Hollinger is pretty, clean, quiet and mostly free from tourists. Like many European towns, this quaint little town is surrounded by a wall. What is rare, however, is that the wall is completely intact. The wall serves as a very easy walk around for those who have a bit of time to enjoy it.
Tread carefully because while walking on the top of the wall, you will notice a time or two that you are walking on someone's roof. You will also notice that at certain points you are walking along a fence surrounding someone's yard.
Along with the homeowner losing some of privacy, they gain a bit of stardom. Everyone that walks by gets a wave of the hand, a friendly nod and a spoken "hello". It is those people that make this town a delight, but there are two more unique features making this town special.
1. The town is known for its "crooked roofs". Walking along the wall, one can definitely see why this is. Not one roof matches its neighbour. Not one roof is straight. Not one roof is regular. Each roof has a different pitch and each roof has a different slant, with some even leaning outwards towards the street.
2. Another strange characteristic about this little gem of a town is that every second or third store has a paper mache pig on display; either sitting in the window or sitting on the patio. Each one different. Each one telling a different story.
Oh the stories we would hear if the people, roofs and pigs all talked!
