One of our stops during our short trip through Hong Kong was to the Ladies Market in the Mong Kok district.
The Ladies market is about 3 - 4 blocks long filled with the usual Tourist market stuff, hand bags, watches, Lazer pointers, cell phone cases, belts, clothes, male G strings shaped like elephants.. The worst is actually seeing hefty, old German guys holding them up, seeing of they will fit!
As you walk down the centre of the crowded market. The typical stereo-typical lines are shouted at you as you even glance at one of their merchandise ; "good deal! Good deal!" " special price just for you!" "I just open! First customer discount" and "Me Love you long time G.I" ( maybe not the last one, well not in this country ) Don't be fooled! They really don't love you, or are special prices. They just want your money. ( Funny though, a ladies.. Market just wanting your money.. Hmm who would have thought! )
They love to bargain, and if you don't or don't do it properly, they get insulted! Prices are usually marked up by about %200 to %300 perfect. When they offer you a price, cut it in half, or even down to 3/4 the price. Too low and it's an insult. Also! Don't ask how much unless you are actually planning on buying it.
The following day we went back to go get the two paintings attached in the gallery. We got there pretty early during their set up, and we decided to keep walking past to the market to see what else we can find. After wondering around allies and streets we came across another market on the corner of Mong Kok road and Fa Yuen street. It was about the same length as the ladies market. Cheaper in prices, since it was geared more towards locals than tourists. And had a lot of very fresh and and delicious fruit.
We didn't end up getting the paintings we hoped for. The woman was In a crappy mood. And didn't want to bargain and was insulting me in Cantonese.
