The Adventures of the Danish Piglet
This will probably just be a short blog entry as I don't have a lot of patience with the slow internet connections over here, but at least it finally works... Or... keeping my fingers crossed.
After Vang Vieng we made our way to Luang Prabang on friday afternoon to meet up with Frauke again. Luang Prabang is a world-heritage listed city and it is very nice. It is pretty, clean and relaxed and we enjoyed the city so much that we decided to stay for a few more days just relaxing - however, we did change guesthouse as the room Frauke and I were staying was quite mouldy and smelled pretty bad... New place MUCH better and cheaper - bonus:)
On saturday we rented 100cc motorbikes (ha ha fun - have never been on such a thing before but it was quite easy and enjoyable) and made our way outside the city to Khuan Si waterfall - beautiful! Turqouise pools of water, many-tiered small waterfalls and one quite big one! At the big waterfall we stumpled upon Anders' fanclub - a group of young Lao men that were really fascinated by Anders. They asked whether we were married or if he was single and told him he was very handsome and tall and then they all wanted their pictures taken along with him. Hah ha ha! Anyway, on our way back out I decided to try my luch jumping of a big branch into one of the pools. It looked deceivingly attractive from below but once I got up there I remembered just how uncomfortable I am just jumping of the 1m springboard when going swimming. But... in I went with a squeak. At night we celebrated Anders' birthday a day early with a nice dinner.
On sunday Frauke and I bought birthday cake for Anders and then Anders and I just spent the day chilling and making our slow way around the inner city of Luang Prabang at a peninsula between the Mekong and Ou river. While leaving one of the city's more important wat's (temples) we heard these drums going strong - fascinating yet ominous at the same time. We followed the sound and stumbled upon some young monk apprentices beating a gigantic drum as a Lao wedding party entered the grounds of this small wat. Quite nice! We then ended up on Phu Si (yes, unfortunately it is pronounced almost like p**** ...) - a small 'mountain' in the middle of the city where we watched the sunset.
Today we charted a boat to take us out to some famous caves 25km up the Mekong or Ou river - Pak Ou. They were nice but nothing compared to what we saw in Vang Vieng and by now we have seen our share of Buddha statues... But the boat trip was nice!
We will leave Luang Prabang early in the morning and make our way bakc to Vientiane to go on a three day trek in the jungle aroung Tha Khaek further down south. This trek should lead us to the amazing cave of Kong Lor - 7km's long - where we will get to kayak through the river flowing inside the cave! Woooppi!!! And it involves trekking in the beautiful nature, more waterfalls and overnight stays in local villages. Will try and make a new entry once we end up in Savannakhet on saturday - oh yeah, we were originally supposed to fly from Pakse to Siem Reap in Cambodia on sunday but Pakse airport is closed due to renovations (which Lao Airlines did not think necessary to tell us but thankfully Frauke knew so we could make arrangements to fly out of Savannakhet instead)...
Hope everyone in doing fine:) Lots of hugs from Mette
