Mel & Jammy's Fun Times!
Sawadee Kaaaaaaa! Greetings from Thailand. This is just a quick update on what we've been up to the last few weeks as we are waiting to take our ferry on our way out of Thailand :( But into Malaysia :). It's a little bit scary leaving as it means we now enter the last leg of our journey which means the real world is approaching a little too fast for our liking!
As for what we've been up to in Thailand, well actually an awful lot of nothing! After visiting Chiang Mai and Pai in northern Thailand we headed down to Bangkok where we spent hours traipsing around the markets and spending far more money than we should have, then we headed to Kanchanaburi. This is where the bridge over the River Kwai was built by the Prisoners of War of the Japanese whilst they were building the Death Railway. We made sure that we learned lots here and visited the war cemeteries and museums. Was a rather sombre couple of days but well worth reminding ourselves what terrible things so many people were made to go through during the 2nd WW. The other thing we did there was visit the TIger Temple (see photos) which was all a bit weird, we are convinced that one day something will go wrong and a small child will be gobbled by one of the tigers as there are no fences or anything to separate humans from tigers. We didn't really like it tho as there were lots of tourists, and the tigers were forced into certain positions just for the sake of a photo. However they are using the money they get from entrance fees to improve the situationfor the tigers and build a new sanctuary, so hopefully a small child's life can be saved!
It was then that we headed down to the coast and spent a couple of days in the Hua Hin area. This was really fun as we hired a car and went into the Khao Sam Roi Yot national park where no other backpackers seem to dare to tread, almost unimaginable in Thailand! The park was beautiful with lots of truly deserted beaches and we had a great time despite struggling to find any budget accommodation. However we did encounter a potentially violent incident with a Thai who had hired out a torch to us for viisting a cave, which resulted in Jammy stealing his radio in return for him not giving us our money back after the torch wouldn't work. Sadly tho' the stealing the radio trick didn't work as we never saw our 50 Baht again! (Don't worry dad we gave in and left him his radio, no thieves here)
So since then we have been on the islands sunning ourselves. We firstly visited Koh Tao where we spent a few days Scuba diving. I managed to do my Open Water course while Jammy just came on the dives with us as he is already qualified. This was sooo much fun, scuba diving is such a great experience-we saw so many fishies but luckily nothing bit me on the lip this time!
And since then we've been on the neighbouring island Koh Phan Gan, which has been a great opportunity to really recharge our batteries with lazy days spent swinging on our hammocks or lying on gorgeous tropical beaches (jealous yet???). But of course we also had to join a few thousand other young crazy ravers and visit the Full Moon Party. The night was pretty nuts but great fun although we are still recovering now!
So that brings us up to date for now, will try and update again soon! Gotta rush, boat to catch! Lots of love mel and Jammy! XXX
