Hola!
Ok, being brief:
Tuesday 12 June - we spent the day in Lima. We had a beautiful lunch (lomo saltado and ceviche, plus a Pisco sour and Pisco passion), explored the historic district and round by the coast. It’s always overcast and humid there and doesn’t feel the safest, so a day was enough!
Wednesday 13 June - we flew to Cusco early. It’s so beautiful here! Mountains everywhere and there’s a festival in town where the locals are performing traditional dances etc so that’s been really special. We were really out of breath on Wednesday due to the high altitude. Last of all we went to a local market and kitted ourselves our in alpaca gear - jumpers, socks, hats etc.
Thursday 14 June - we explored town a bit more (a few of the squares and the San Blas area) before having lunch from a balcony overlooking Plaza de Armas and the festival going on. We were then picked up at 2pm and drove for nearly 2 hours (the scenery was breathtaking - snow capped mountains) until we reached base camp near Urubamba for the sky lodge. Before we knew it we had harnesses on and began our ascent by way of via ferrata up the mountain. It was more work than we expected and didn’t get to the top until gone dark! But once we reached the top we were cooked a three course meal in the dining pod, had a glass of Malbec and then climbed a bit higher. We were in the top pod. We fell asleep looking at the million stars (and even saw a shooting star).
Friday 15 June - we woke up at 5am, (before sunrise), got our harnesses on and sat up on the top platform over our pod to watch the valley go from light to dark. The views were breathtaking. After breakfast in the dining pod we zip lined back down - 6 in total, the longest one being 700m. You couldn’t see the end of it! We did that one together. We just checked back in to our hotel in Cusco and will be going to the Inca Trail pre-departure briefing this evening.
Inca Trail - we’ll be on the Inca Trail for four days (Saturday to Tuesday) and will be completely off the radar. So speak to you all when we get back!
Fun facts:- Peru has over 3000 types of potatoes, but generally they only eat 10 of those. In one of the Jamiroquai videos he wears a hat with a red feather, which is actually a Peruvian hat that was found in the Princess of the Andes’ tomb.
