The South Island, New Zealand. What a place!
In Lake Tekapo we got our hiking boots on (not literally - couldn't fit them in the backpacks) and climbed Mt John to the summit. It took just shy of an hour and a half to tramp the steep track to the height of 1,029m. From the top there are amazing views of surrounding snowy mountain ranges and Lake Tekapo, Lake Alexandrina and Lake McGregor (altogether, the Mackenzie Basin). Lake Tekapo is a blazing turquoise colour, caused by a sediment in the water left from when a glacier scraped across the rock below, gouging out the lake's basin. The hot chocolate in the Astro Cafe and views at the summit were worth the walk.
The 'Welcome to Lake Tekapo' sign says 'Enjoy the Stars', and we certainly weren't disappointed. In 2012 the Mackenzie Area was declared an International Dark Sky Reserve, one of only five in the world. Wrapped up warm, we headed down to the lake from our campervan and sat stargazing with a bottle of wine and a bar of Whittaker's Hokey Pokey chocolate. The stars are incredible, with the Milky Way strip clearly visible through the night sky.
Next stop, Queenstown. Probably the most beautiful, adrenalin packed place on Earth! A little story that sums it up perfectly...
'Once upon a time I visited a far far away land that had ginormous mountains, a cold as lake, and an old as steamboat. You'll never believe this place. In this land there are lots of crazy people doing crazy things, they jump off bridges tied to elastic bands, drive fast boats with jets, fly off mountains, eat huge burgers, drink cocktails out of teapots, ride glass boxes to the sky, slide down mountains on planks, and the people are named after fruits. It's such a crazy land, you'll never believe it...'.
Naturally, we had to join in! We rode the glass skyline gondola up the mountain to have a go on the Luge. It was such good fun! There are 2 runs and we both had 3 goes. You sit in a cart type thing and race each other down the bendy concrete path on the mountain. We loved it!
We topped off the day with a double Fergburger, and cocktail teapot at the Find Bar (the World Bar's pop-up venue).
Today, we did something completely crazy. We got on the AJ Hackett bus, the original bungy jump company. We drove past the first ever commercial bungy jump, the Kawarau Bridge jump of 43m. We continued until we reached the Nevis bungy jump.
Once we were kitted up in our harnesses, we were transported across the valley in a small cable car to a pod suspended 134m (440ft) in the air. With adrenalin pumping, Max jumped first. It's the scariest thing walking onto a tiny square ledge with an elastic cord strapped to your ankles and nothing in front of you but air, and the hills in the distance. Max had a great jump; he fully bent his knees and launched himself head first. You get just over 8 seconds of free fall reaching speeds up to 130kph. It's a sensation that can't be described.
Steph jumped after a few other people. She was shaking, but didn't bottle it! She got to the ledge and on the count down of 3, jumped. But didn't quite dive head first like you're supposed too. Body in shock, she went down feet first and flipped to upside down about half way down the fall. Ironically, the jump masters said after that it's the scarier way.
We did it, we're Nevis jumpers! Go big or go home. Wahoo!
The valley is also home to the Nevis Swing, the world's biggest swing - a 300m (984ft) arc (the length of 3 rugby pitches) and 70m drop free fall at 125kph. You can do the swing tandem, so we decided to do it together, backwards. The crew decided to give us a fright and let us drop when we weren't expecting it. After the initial fall, it was good fun swinging backwards and forwards until we were only 40m above the riverbed.
We topped the day off with a second Fergburger. This time Max went for a Big Al, the biggest one they do with two 1/4 pound burgers, eggs, beetroot, the lot.
We're exhausted from the adrenalin.

Danielle There's just something about the Nevis that means you have to have a double Fergburger! Your post took me right back - so glad you loved beautiful little Queenstown xxx
Sam Nicholas This place sounds fascinating! Well done for conquering that bungee jump, those photos are great! Burger looks good too!
