The Queen's Cabaret
After a few hot and humid days in Bangkok, a few boring days in some misguided Lonely Planet inspired adventures, we disembarked from the night train and caught a ferry to Ko Ta, famed for its excellent snorkelling and diving.
Whilst I concur that the underwater life was indeed spectacular, it will be the creatures of the night i will remember the island for. A few beers on from a mouthwatering beachside BBQ, we accepted the invitation from a rather well dressed individual to attend 'the Queens Cabaret'. Seated with our ludicrously overpriced beverages we wondered what delights awaited us onstage. The anticipation was somewhat spoiled by the 'performers' lurking outside in full view smoking and hoisting up their garters and arranging their all important undergarments.
Some strange warbling began, and stagelights were up. What followed was an hour and half of terrible miming and out of synch dance moves performed to my mums favourite 70's disco hits. Whilst some of the performers were truly convincing (are they pre or post op? or just trannies?), others failed to disguise their Shaquille Oneill sized hands and Desperate Dan jawlines, which simply made the whole event even more entertaining. Despite this, it must be said, I have certainly seen a far less attractive group of genuine females on a friday night out back home, so for this (Lady)boys; I salute you.
