Hello! Surprisingly we have found some time to update our blog again today which is brilliant as we had such a great day!
After spending far too long on the internet this morning (free internet in a coffee shop when you buy a coffee - brilliant!) we wandered along 'Avenue of the Stars' which is a bit like the Hong Kong version of the Hollywood stars with the handprints on the floor of the movie stars. We only recognised Jackie Chan, Jet Li and Bruce Lee unfortunately and Matt's hands were much bigger than all of theirs - surprise, surprise! After doing that we caught the Star Ferry from our island (Kowloon Island) to Hong Kong Island. The ferry was great, only about 2 pounds each and we got a great view of the HK skyline as we crossed. Once we got there we walked to 'Graham Street' (Matt was very chuffed!!) which is this really cool little old winding street full of fruit and veg vendors and fishmongers - it was quite random as it's kind of in the middle of the business area and surrounded by high rise buildings but it's packed with locals trying to get a good deal for thier food and we haggled for a few apples and a banana (which were the best we've ever had, haha!). As we got to the end of Graham Street we were interviewed by three Chinese students who were doing a project on the apparent closure of Graham Street which we were very sad to hear - apparently they are demolishing the whole thing quite soon so we stressed our disatisfaction about this on their camera and they were very greatful!!!
After our little adventure on Graham Street we visited HK's version of Soho which we really liked there were loads of cute little restaurants and side streets. It was incredibly expensive (in our experience, Soho is always expensive wherever you go in the world!) so we didn't get food, but it was nice to have a wander up all the little streets and really get a feel for the city. We found a little bakery where we got some rolls for lunch and sat in a really cool little park (completely found by mistake). I also treated myself to a Mars Bar - it's amazing how desperate you can get for 'normal' food that you recognise when you have been travelling for a few weeks!!!
With our bellies full we then decided to embark on something that we have both really wanted to do since getting to HK - the Peak Tram which is a tram that was built back in 1889 (we think!) by a guy from Scotland to get people out of the city and up high in to the hills. It's pretty much used in the same way today however it's been totally touristified. You go up the tram which is at a 45 degree angle for most of the journey (very cool!) and when you get there you immediately end up in this ghastly shopping mall type place which is full of touristy crap which really disappointed us. We continued up through the weird mall place (they also have Madame Tussauds here but we didn't bite) to the top where there was the most fantastic view over Hong Kong (we only paid about a pound extra for this). We stayed up there for ages just enjoying the view and it's been a really sunny day so we could see quite far and caught the sun a little bit. Got some great photos but it's taking ages to upload them so it might have to wait until tomorrow if we can get online. We went up the tram at about 4 ish and did intend to wait there until sunset but got a bit too hungry and went back down just before to find some food. We were a bit disappointed about that, however it got really smoggy at about 6pm so the visibilty would have been pretty poor anyway.
We went to a 'fast food' place for dinner which was Japanese - Matt had steak and pepper sauce for about 4 pounds which was great value! We have really found the food here expensice. It's hard to eat out cheaply - when we were in Beijing there were street markets absolutely everywhere selling food for next to nothing but there's not so much of that here - that we have seen of anyway. That's a shame because we really enjoy eating on the street stalls where you can find tasty food for a real bargain - sometimes dinner for under a pound! We did manage to find a supermarket though and have bought some porridge, peanut butter and strawberry jam for breakfasts so we don't have to keep eating out three times a day!!
After dinner we took the Star Ferry back to Kowloon Island where we caught the light show from Hong Kong Island which was amazing! We were sitting in the sightseeing section and they play really loud music which times in perfectly with the lights that are flashing on and off... very cool!! The lights are all really bright and different colours and look like they are dancing across the water - it was very similar to The Burj al Arab in Dubai twinkling away... brilliant! It only lasted 15 minutes and it was starting to rain so we then walked back to our 'hostel from hell' and picked up our laundry (which we paid too much for but at least our clothes are now clean!) and went back to our room which still stinks from the horrible guy last night - we have vowed not to share dorm rooms again unless absolutely ESSENTIAL!!! And apparently this isn't the worst place to stay in Hong Kong!
Matt has decided to go and watch the football at 3am HK time this morning (it's a 7pm match and apparently a very important match) so I have switched beds with his mate Coop (who did the Roam China Tour with us - his name is actually Andrew!) who is now staying in that horrid room with Matt (haha!) but I may have drawn the short straw because now I am in a dorm with 12 people on a top bunk that apparently rattles. But my friend Monet has given me a sleeping pill (my saviour!) so that should hopefully get me off to sleep because I'm not too good with sleeping in these weird dorm situations! In Bangkok we have a double room again which I am looking forward to - am so lucky Matt doesn't snore!!!
Tomorrow we can finally check out of 'hell hole' and are planning to go and see the Giant Buddah on another island before leaving for the airport as our flight to Bangkok is at 8.45pm. We have managed to book our hostel in Bangkok and should arrive quite late but we've arranged late check in so it should be okay. Matt booked a hostel with a swimming pool and comically a gym (we will take photos!) so we are hoping to have a good rest by the pool and finally getting some sun!
We will try and upload some more photos tomorrow as apparently internet connection is quite slow in Thailand unless you are 'in the know' and we got some really nice photos today. And hopefully we will have some good photos of the Giant Buddah too which we are really excited to go and see. So goodnight from me (and my sleeping tablet!) and will update tomorrow! xxxx
