Hello again everyone! Today we travelled from Siem Reap to the capital of Cambodia, Phnom Penh. It was a 6 hour bus journey (aggghhh) but at least we got to travel in the daylight for once and see some of the Cambodian countryside. This country is very flat compared to other places we have visited, like Laos, and incredibly dusty and hot. It was great to pass by all the little villages and see the locals going about their daily lives. It's amazing how many kids are just sitting at the side of the road playing in the dirt. Imagine that happening in England!
So, the journey to Phnom Penh... we were picked up at 9am by a mini bus which didn't have enough seats so I had to sit on Matt's lap for the short journey which was hillarious (especially as the roads weren't really flat!). The whole bus was laughing at us and Matt holding on to me to stop me from slipping off. We then got to the main bus which, luckily, had enough seats for us, but was just full of people trying to grab on to us either begging or trying to sell stuff. You feel so rude just walking past and trying to ignore them, but it's the only way to get away from it.
The rest of the journey was fine and we arrived in Phnom Penh at about 3.30 this afternoon. So far, so good - it's a very busy city and we imagine it to be how Bangkok was maybe 10 years ago. There are cars, mopeds and tuk tuks everywhere and the roads are absolutely crazy. There are no markings on the roads or traffic lights or anything... something we are used to in Asia but it seems to be even worse here! Chaos everywhere. It's pretty scary when you are in a tuk tuk, but the drivers are fearless and manage to always get you to your destination without crashing/dying. Our guesthouse is nice and they are arranging our visas for Vietnam as well as a bus to Ho Chi Min city (Saigon) the day after tomorrow. Because of our flights to Oz on the 1st May we will only have 2 weeks there so we are planning our trip day by day. This is something we haven't really had to do since our trip started but we tend to drift a bit like that so it might be a good thing for us to have everything planned! We met a couple in our hotel who very kindly gave us their Vietnam guidebook which will be a great help to navigate us around.
Tonight we went out for a nice meal in the capital and also to a really cute little cafe for a coffee and cookies. All of the proceeds go in to orphanages and help for the local people so we really felt like we were doing something for a good cause. There's lots of places like that here so we hope we can give something back to the community whilst we are here. There are loads of beggers, mainly kids, on the streets which we find really uncomfortable and have been told over and over again not to give them any money, so like Siem Reap we just walk past and ignore them.
We aren't really sure what we are doing tomorrow. One of the popular things to do in Phnom Penh is to see the killing fields which we really should do as we have come all the way here but we know it will be a very depressing experience and the trip has been such a happy trip so far I guess we're a bit wary of doing that. We're definately going to the gym though as Matt will probably go mad if we don't and we are going to treat ourselves and go to a nice hotel with a pool. We will probably update the blog next when we are in Vietnam, so until then... goodbye from us both xxxxx
