We arrived in Krabi and made our way to the guesthouse Jono had found - Chan Cha Lay - our cheapest yet at 9 pounds a night but so nice! We went out for a cocktail and some curry to celebrate our first night in the South! On Tuesday we hired motorbikes for the day (only 3 pounds for a day!!) and headed off to explore Krabi. We stopped off at one of the beaches for a swim in the beautiful blue clear water. It was great to see the island with the independence of stopping off where we liked! We caught a ferry to Ko Lanta on Wednesday and we were disappointed when we arrived - we have realised that there isn't really anywhere in Thailand that you can go these days which isn't infested with tourists! The beaches are covered in different restaurants and hotels and it really is hard to find a little piece of paradise! Having said that, the scenery is beautiful and we saw an amazing sunset. After an interesting night of hearing noises and dubious cleanliness of the room (worse for Jono and Anel!) we decided to cut our losses and head off to Phi Phi Island. The ferry to Phi Phi was nice and we arrived feeling a lot more positive - the huge limestone rocks in the water are really incredible and with the crystal clear blue water, you can see why they chose it to film The Beach. We hired a longtail boat between the 4 of us and went exploring around the island in search of accommodation. Again, we realised how popular everything is and we finally managed to find 2 beach bungalows on Tonka Beach by evening! We spent 3 nights at Tonka - we went on a day trip to Phi Phi Ley where most of the The Beach was filmed - it is incredibly beautiful and is a national park, so a lot more untouched. It's quite strange to see all the Tsunami evacuation signs - it's hard to imagine how people must have felt, sitting on a beach with an enormous wave coming towards them - scary. Anel and I went into town one of the days and caught Tonka's boat back in the evening - with a heavily laden boat and very choppy waters! It was also dark as we had left late and it was a rather scary experience making it back - we were ready for our cocktails when we finally arrived safely! On Sunday we moved to Long Beach on Phi Phi which is a more attractive beach and had better accommodation. There are also loads of huts where you can have a massage on the beach so we have been taking full advantage!! Jonny and Matt went diving and saw some incredible coral, turtles and an abundance of fish - great visibility. Matt went out fishing for a day too. The weather was perfect - hot and sunny, so it was a good way to spend our last few days on Thailand's beaches! We have decided to skip out Vietnam and Cambodia - mainly because we feel that our enthusiasm is waning slightly and we would rather come back another time to see these countries. I think perhaps that we are starting to feel the 9 months of living out of a suitcase and we are looking forward to spending Christmas and some summer months in South Africa before we head back to London, the Rat Race and Reality :( So it's off to Bangkok for our last few days of shopping, getting our suits fitted at the tailor and then London for another 10 days while Matt's visa for South Africa is processed. How time has flown over the last 9 months and what amazing experiences we have had....Getting married to start - Trekking, Anaconda Hunting, Piranha Fishing, seeing the salt flats of Bolivia and the awesome mountains of Argentina. From the Inca Trail to sandboarding, climbing volcanoes to eating fried bugs, visiting Disneyland and Yosemite, fishing in Panama and biking the Golden Gate Bridge, snorkelling in Fiji and feeding Kangaroos in Oz, seeing the sights of Malaysia to learning to cook in Thailand...and that's just a few things that come to mind! We've laughed a lot, cried a few times, got irritated, slept in a few dodgy hotels, had a number of hairy transport experiences but we've never forgotten how amazingly fortunate we have been to have had this opportunity.
