The boarder crossing into Bolivia was easy compared to crossing from Ecuador into Peru, they didn´t even ask for a bribe like they sometimes do! Our first stop was in Copacabana where we visited the Isla del Sol on Lake Titicaca on what must be the slowest boat in the whole wide world, you really had to stare hard out of the window so see if you were really moving. There were more Inca ruins to visit which to be honest seem a bit tame once you´ve been to Machu Picchu. There was then an optional hike from the north of the island to the south which Martin did while I, feeling lazy, sat in the sun and waited for him.
We then moved onto La Paz, the capital of Bolivia. We had to cross Lake Titicaca by boat while the truck went over on a dodgy looking barge. From La Paz we went Gravity Assisted Mountain Biking down the Worlds Most Dangerous Road to Coroico. The ride was 63kms in total but the first 20kms was just normal road. The guide told us we reached speeds of up to 50 kilometers an hour. We started at 4750m where is was freezing cold and raining and descended to 1100m where it was hot and sunny. The 43kms of the Worlds Most Dangerous Road was all gravel surface with no barriers and sheer drops of up to 600m at the sides. The scariest thought was of sliding on the gravel over the cliff! It is very narrow in places and many cars have gone over the edge while trying to pass another vehicle that they´ve met. There are plenty of places along the road where there are shrines, memorials and crosses, and you can see wreckages down at the bottom of the cliff.
La Paz is another typical busy South American city built in a valley at about 4000m above sea level - the highest capital city in the world. We wandered around the Witch markets where they sell dried llama foetuses! These are supposedly to be buried in the foundations of new buildings to bring good luck and prosperity!
