Mark & Han's Big Adventure
Wednesday 20th - Thursday 21st - Bolivia
The border had opened early that morning and we met Johanne & Mario at 8. We walked the 100yds across the road and completed our exit requirements from Peru before walking across the Bridge into Bolivia and repeating the immigration process for entry into Bolivia. Shortly after the four of us were on board a rickety old bus bound for the countries capital city La Paz. The ride included a stop at a military checkpoint and wonderful views as we wound our way into the city form the mountains above. We checked into our chosen hostel which was actually an old colonial style hotel 'The Torrino' and headed off to find a recommended travel agent to book ourselves on some tours. After finding 'Indigena tours' tucked away in a small shopping arcade we booked up for a few things. 'Calle de Morte' otherwise known as death road cycle ride, a Pampas wet lands three-day tour and a three day 4x4 tour from Uyuni where we cross the Salt planes and witness some unreachable places. With the next week booked up we had burger and chips and an early night.
Calle de Morte!!! Hannah had been quiet all morning but we had met Jo & Mario for breakfast before making our way to the Madness shop where we met Aaron our cockney guide for the day! We were issued our safety equipment and loaded into a van. We drove for an hour to reach the highest point outside of La Paz where the winter solstice had just been celebrated. During that hour we were given our safety brief and a run down of we were going to achieve. After our bikes were fitted up to us we were on our way!! Hannah had hardly spoken at this point as she was doing her best not to appear scared or nervous although really she was s***ting herself!!! First up a long downhill tarmac road section which was very useful for getting used to the bikes which had brakes the opposite sides to UK bikes. We reached good speeds and overtook a couple of large lorries in the first section. A North American team who blasted the road out from the side of the mountain costing millions and taking quite a few years to complete built the road. We continue through a drug checkpoint and continue our fast ride down hill. Hannah was getting the hang of it now and was starting to relax. This was the easy bit!! A 4km uphill section was hard work but it was after this the real fun would begin. All our bikes were checked before hitting the dirt track section of the death road.
The road only wide enough for one vehicle was a dusty, rocky track which until recently had been the only link road into our destination. Passing places were provided but there were no safety measures in place at all. With sheer thousand foot drops on one side of you at all times you had to be on you game a all times. But WOWWEE what fun!!!!!!! Speeding through giant canyons with possible death at every turn certainly got the adrenaline pumping!! Stopping every now and then to bunch up the group and hear a story of busses full of passengers plunging to their inevitable death, cyclists who had missed a turn or met on coming traffic and ridden off the road were all very entertaining. A cyclist had died in the last month so we were all very focused the whole way down!! The lower we got the higher the temperature as we descended into tropical climate. By the end of the ride Hannah was travelling nearly as fast as I was!!! By the end we were both shattered but made up that we had completed the ride on the most dangerous road in the world!! A swim, beer & dinner was enjoyed at the Hotel Esmerelda with stunning views of the mountains and if you looked close enough the road which we had ridden down!! 3 hour ride in the van back to La Paz
