For the last week we have been based on Koh Tao which is in many ways the younger brother to Koh Phangan. It has a more laid back style most likely aided by the huge diving culture here. The resort we're staying at is absolutely beautiful - set amidst a tropical forest our bungalow is gorgeous and at a staggering £40 a night it's luxury at a bargain price. Isobel was in her element discovering all the little extras that are included.
Given the quality of diving in Koh Tao we decided to go on a snorkeling trip. A private taxi took us around the island to some of the best snorkeling/diving spots I've ever encountered.
The trip started off sedately with the usual calm waters and some casual chat. Then there was a noticeable change in the current and it started to get decidedly choppy! Bearing in mind we're in a long boat that holds 6 at a push this quickly became more than a little hairy. Wave after wave came crashing in and we were holding on for dear life whilst the boat was spending just as much time in the air (I believe the dudes call this hang time) than it was in the sea. There was no chat and I was already eyeing up the life jackets! Thankfully we got near enough to the coastline and our driver said "too choppy" - bloody right, the tanned faces had been replaced with ashen milk chops.
Anyway this was one of our three snorkel stops and boy was it worth it. It was akin to diving into a giant fish bowl with ornate coral and what seemed at least 30 different varieties of fish… it was spellbinding. The only downside was we hadn't hired an underwater camera at this point and by the time we did, the views weren't as magnificent. That said we may have peaked early but it will be an experience we'll never forget for a number of reasons!
