After a quick two and a half hour plane journey I arrived in Broome completely terrified and hungover. I got a taxi to the backpackers which was only 10 minutes away and when I arrived it was dead, there was no one in the office so I just sat on my own for 2 hours, not the best start. When I finally got the key for my room, I couldn't open it so I asked a woman if she could help me and it turns out she was travelling on her own as well so I was relieved that there was someone to talk to.
I chilled out for the first couple of days and then decided it was time to start dropping in CVs on top of the jobs I had already applied for online, but there only seems to be bar and waitressing going which I really don't want to do.
I've decided to move on quickly, as stunning as Broome is, it is very quiet because its still the wet season. A guy i met in the hostel is driving to Darwin (a 2 day trip) so going to go up with him as the flights are crazy expensive at the moment!
I now have a roommate as well a Canadian girl called Marcy who is lovely and used to the whole travelling bug as she is finishing off her second year visa, so I'm in good company!
Me and Marcy decided to do a Camel ride along the beach at sunset, how romantic haha!
To be fair I was absolutely pooing myself getting on, doesn't help that I don't like horses and these are twice the size, once we got on it was fine. I honestly won't see a sunset like it, Broome is stunning, especially when there is a 60 year old man fishing in a thong...what a site! After the camel ride we went for a few cocktails looking over the beach before going out to a bar/club called Oasis which was a good laugh. Met a 20 year old guy there called Reece who had worked on the Camel ride who has travelled from Honk Kong to Australia and is planned to go over to New York. He is doing photography and journalism, writing articles for various websites so will look out for those when I get back home.
17th March Crocodile Farm
There is the old crocodile farm which is literally about 2 doors down from the hostel and apparently still has 60 crocs in the farm waiting to be transferred to the new one. I don't know how happy I would have been staying there knowing that haha! It was amazing, unbelievable seeing these huge Crocodiles just being kept back by a fence. There was a feeding time at 3pm which gave us an hour to walk around the farm looking at snakes, all types of birds and of course, crocodiles. Claire (the woman I had met on the first night) was banging against the fence as we couldn't see anything, all of a sudden a crocodile jumps out of the water probably only 3 feet away from us. I mean we all jumped but my god Claire legged it, me and Marcy were just laughing our heads off, it was hilarious! It came to feeding time and we were allowed to hold these Crocs, probably the length of your forearm, with their jaws taped up thank god, along with these 1 week old ones which were tiny. Going through feeding the big boys though were unreal, the power of their jaws as the guide fed them was unbelievable; put it this way I wouldn't want his job! There were a few that had even chomped through the fence ahhhhhh! After that we had another look around the place and came across Southern Cassowary; Marcy had worked on a wildlife tour so knew quite a bit about most of the animals, these are ones that stuck in my memory. Apparently the females go around with most of the males and when she produces and egg, she will go up to one of the males to basically say 'you the daddy'. Sounded like some Jerry Springer stuff to me, what a tart!
That night, as we had hired a car, we decided to drive to the Ganthium point for Sunset, which is almost like a rock pier and has a lighthouse on it. Took some awesome photos with the sun hitting the red dirt, the colours were amazing so I will upload some at some point.
I have absolutely loved Broome for the week I have been here but time to move on, an early start of 4am for the drive up to Darwin, it's going to be a looooong drive but a good one hopefully. Good times ahead! How could I forget amazing victory for Wales over England, just gutted I didn't get to watch it!!
