Maria's 2006-7 Round the World Trip
HI THERE!
Well I'm finally here. After 3 days of travelling I arrived yesterday in Cambodia. So.......... the last few days. Well, delayed flights meant that I left London quite late but we finally took off and my over tiredness meant that my complete hatred for flying wasn't even noticed by my body, however, I didn't manage to sleep.
I touched down in Bangkok and wondered with the 10 hours that I had if it was worth checking into my hotel afterall. I decided that is was and decided to have a few hours sleep and a shower then go back to the airport. I couldn't sleep - the heat was amazing, I've never felt anything like it in my life, even compared with Madagascar. It was like London on a hot day, when you can't breathe and then add on about 20 degrees! SO I showered then went and had a look around. Randomly started talking to some Canadian blokes, one of which was going to the airport at the same time so we ended up sharing a taxi.
Bangkok was ok. I didn't really have the time to do anything and it was more than a bit difficult trying to stay awake until 5am when you haven't slept for the last 2 days.
So, at 4am I start off to the airport.Got there in good time and a lovely security guard took a bit of a shine to me. I was quite glad of this as my bags were 2kg over the allowance (15kg) but he told the woman on the desk just to let them go through - no excess charges which was very nice!
Then I went through security, or at least tried but they kept trying to tell me something and I wasn't understanding. I finally found an english speaker who said I had to buy the departure tax. I knew about it and had the 500 Baht ready but didnt realise that you had to put it in a machine, I thought that you paid one of the people on the way through..... like in Turkey. Needless to say this made me a bit late and I almost missed by flight. If it hadn't been for the fact that I already had a VISA I would have missed my flight. And who came to my rescue? My lovely security guard who not only ran with me through the airport and carriedall my bags, he also held the plane then put me in a car with a blue flashing light to the plane! It completely wasn't my fault that I was a bit late, but I did feel like a pratt! Apparantly they were supposed to tell me when I checked in about the machine but she didn't.
So I arrived at 9am in Phnom, Penh, Cambodia and went straight to bed. I slept until 6pm then got up for a few hours to investigate and have some dinner, I went back to bed at around 1am and woke up at 4pm! I couldn't believe it. I still feel rough as hell. I've never been jetlagged before and I'm not taking it too well. But I wanted to get up and explore and try to be with it as the football kicks off at 11pm tonight (we are 6 hours ahead with the UK summer time).
Cambodia is fantastic, the people are lovely and the country is beautiful. I'm not particularly comfortable with the level of prostitution, which is not a shameful thing here, in fact families are very proud here if their daughter is a prostitute as it brings money for the family.
I felt a bit like Bridget Jones last night, chatting with 12 Cambodian prostitutes about make-up and men! You don't get white women out here so I have a lot of people staring at me. There are loads of US and Oz men but are complete dirty b*****s, the way they treat the women out here is completely appalling, no wonder they all come alone on 'business.'
Well, I have checked out the bar that is showing the football so all set.
Better go before I faint........... its 40 degrees and I am a little bit hot! I should have some sightseeing stuff to mention next time as am about to pop out and look at some buildings and stuff.
