After spending just one day in the Colonial town of Galle, where we explored the old fort mostly, we headed further south, to two beach cities.
Our first stop was overpriced and over-developed Unawatuna. We figure that most people there were rich, middle aged Europeans who just wanted a day at the beach after Galle. However, the water was incredibly blue and the sand nice. But for the price we paid for dinner and our room, we figured we could find better if we continued onwards.
The next day, we found paradise- Mirissa. Some of our friends back in Korea had traveled here previously, so we took their advice, and they were completely right! It's how Unawatuna would have been 15 years ago. Undeveloped, perfectly priced, and barely a footprint in the warm sand.
The best part of Mirissa so far has been our hotel. Kenny bargained with the owner of Villa Sea View to get a room for $10/Night for three nights. My favorite is the view! We have a perfect view of the beach, cliffs, palm trees, and the incredibly blue water and sky. Even when the storm rolled in yesterday afternoon around 4, which it seems to every day, we had a great view of the rainbow. I think I got some decent pictures of it, but it was so much better in person!
After two more days and nights of lounging on the beach and reading some books, we're on our way north- out of Asia and on to Istanbul! As much as we love Asia, we're ready for some different food, cleaner rooms, Western-style toilets with toilet paper, and fewer bugs. However, we'll definitely miss the SE Asia prices that we're so used to paying. More from Istanbul in a few days :)
