With our 25 hours in Bangkok done and dusted, we grabbed a cheeky 5 hour sleep (a luxury these days) before jumping on our bus to the Thai / Cambodian armpit of arranyprathet.
Devastated at the size of the border queue we cooked in the midday sun before eventually getting to the front only to be told that in fact December actually has 31 days (oops) and we had officially overstayed our welcome. 'prease join other queue, you pay now' with one look at our new line we jumped to the front claiming to be illegal immigrants and got some fairly nasty looks. Who knew that once you make it past the Thai border you have to join the yet another queue to enter Cambodia. As we watched tens of people pay their way to the front we gave them scowls and reluctantly held on to our morals/backpacks.
Siem Reap still remains a mysterious place to us. Even though we spent 3 nights there, we only have recollection of one. The first night was a write off thanks to some questionable roadside grub - the choice being unidentified meat on a stick or fried crickets (wish we'd gone for the crickets now). The third night we spent chuckling at the ceiling for 5 hours after enjoying a couple of delicious 'happy herb' pizzas.... All the rage in Cambodia!
The one day we can recall was spent at the magnificent Angkor Wat temples where we toured the 1500 year old palaces of ancient Angkor kings by tuk tuk. Arriving at 5am for sunrise we thought we'd be the only people there but were met with thousands of Japanese tourists with the same idea. Nevertheless we had the whole day to explore sites including the sets for the Indiana jones and tomb raider movies. Sai peacefully observed the architecture whilst I ran around pretending to be on temple run to my hearts content until I bumped into an old mate from the island at which point I held it down. 6 hours and numerous temples later I knew our time of being 'cultured' was over when Sai's comments went from 'this is simply magnificent' to 'blah blah temple blah, can we go?'.
We learnt a couple of things in Siem Reap... Sai wants a Cambodian child (unsure about my part in this) and that bum guns are awesome.
