Having just arrived at Irkutsk after a four day train ride it is so nice to be on solid ground. The width was probably only about two single beds put together with four people crammed inside. It was fine for a few days but by the forth I definitely had cabin fever. I watched the world go by, slept and drank vodka with our group.
We were put in a gorgeous chalet with amazing views of Lake Baikal. The lake was pretty much frozen over, and ice had formed that looked like waves. It is probably the most beautiful place I have ever been. Words and pictured cannot do it justice. We walked along the lake with or guide, which was terrifying as you could see the water under eighty cm of ice. People were skuduing, skiing and driving over the lake. It was one of our best days here. It was so peaceful and took your breath away.
The next day we went dog sledding, which I am sure lots of you would like to do. Both Luke and I sat down for the first ten minutes and then were allowed to steer for the last bit. The dogs were sniffing and playing with each other, but also snapping and you kinda forget they are wild dogs. It is such a cool way to travel with the scenery whipping past and the dogs love to run and stretch their legs. I would highly recommend doing it if anyone has the chance.
To top off these amazing experiences we ended our time in Irkutsk we all partook in a banya. This is a Russian sauna where you go in for a bit then go to a seperate room and all drink hot tea, then you go back and then you run out and jump in the snow and then you receive a traditional whipping with hot birch leaves. The birch is supposed to secrete oil and open up your pores. It kinda hurts for the first bit but then it is surprisingly nice. It is definitely an experience!
Anyway need to go as getting on another two day train to Mongolia. Love to you all xxxxx

Annie Aww Philippa you're so cute. So glad you sound like you're having the best time ever. That birch leaf whipping bit sounds odd though... can't imagine you partaking in such a thing haha! This was 10 days ago... where in the world are you now? xxx
Philippa Child In Beijing lovely :) We are a bit behind on blogs! Yes it was rather wierd but oddly nice and my skin felt so good afterwads. Missing you lots. How are you doing? Any luck in jobs? xxxx
Annie Sorry to hear you were feeling ill! Hope you didn't miss out on much. You're in China already? Wow. Miss you guys too, still can't my head around the fact that you're halfway round the world! I am well, keeping busy, had 3 interviews in the last 2 weeks, I know I didn't get 2 of them... thinking I should make a change sometime soon! Btw it's still pretty arctic here and has been snowing again so you're not missing much! x
