Lucy's Travels
Thursday 22nd January
Having spent 17 hours on a bus we were both feeling surprisingly fresh, perhaps it had something to the coffee shots we had early in the morning? We made our way to the hostel in St Kilda, by the beach in Melbourne to check in and headed straight back out to keep ourselves awake and to explore the city we very quickly visited three years ago. We spent the day on the beach and later headed into the city for a walk around Federation Square.
Friday 23rd January
We had a potter around town and through the Victoria markets taking in all of the citchy artwork in and around the city. The city was very busy because of the tennis so there were lots of things to do i.e. watch people trapezing in the middle of the city, watch the tennis live in Fed Sq.
Saturday 24th January
We were up early to head to Melbourne Park to watch the tennis. It was a fantastic day, cool day and we were able to watch: a women's singles, man's singles, mixed double, female doubles. We heard that Andy Murray was playing in the evening so we decided to upgrade our day pass tickets to watch an evening match. We had great seats, very close to the court and the atmosphere was spectacular. It was very exciting to cheer for someone on the GB team and reminded me of the Olympics again. Murray won but apparently at his next game he was knocked out of the tournament. We had a great day wondering from court to court and later in the afternoon enjoyed a very cool white wine in the Jacob's creek bar. We didn't leave until late but we had a fantastic day and this has certainly inspired me to try a lot harder for Wimbledon tickets 2010.
Sunday 25th January
We spent the day at Federation Square watching the tennis and later headed to the Melbourne botanical gardens to watch 'Australia' at the Moonlight Outdoor Cinema. Melbourne can reach very chilly temperatures in the evening, so we took a huge blanket with us and wrapped up warm to watch the three hour film! Watching a film outside is very distracting because it's so tempting to look at other things, especially the stars. The film was pants and far too cheesy but was a good watch considering we are in Australia.
Monday 26th January - Australia Day
The city was alive with patriotic Aussies singing 'Aussie Aussie Aussie, oi oi oi' and the weather was starting to heat up a heat wave made it's way towards the city. We had a look around some of the art galleries and museums and made our way to Federation Wharf to watch the fireworks, which were fantastic.
Tuesday 28th January
The heat wave had arrived and 45C was not a very comfortable temperature. We ventured to the beach but it was just too hot to bear so we went on a river cruise to take a look at the parts of the city we had missed, which was very pleasant.
Wednesday 29th January
We checked out of the hostel and headed to the airport to catch a flight to Tasmania.
Melbourne was great and although the diary above may seem a bit bare and repetitive we didn't have very much spare time at all, we would certainly go back to Melbourne again.
