Lucy and Dave's World Travels
22/6/09 We arrived at the hotel by 5am, but luckily, nearly all of our rooms were available to be moved into, so we slept until past 10.
At 11 we left for the airport, to fly in a light aeroplane over the Nazca Lines! The planes were so tiny they had only 6 seats each including the pilot's, so we had to go in two planes. Dave was pleased at getting seated next to the pilot! The lines are great - a monkey, triangles, condor, hummingbird, astronaut, a pair of hands, a tree, a root and a couple of others. They aren't as big as I had thought, hundreds of metres across instead of whole km, but they were still impressive. I took lots of photos, and Dave took a couple, but then he started feeling sick, because the plane banked so sharply and often. Jess and Charlotte, who were in the back, also began to feel ill, and then I succumbed, although I've never felt airsick before. I'd woken up that morning feeling a bit sick, though, so I might not have felt ill normally. We all really liked the lines, though, despite not feeling very well. After this we were driven to the pre-Inca cemetery, having been introduced to Susie, our guide for this. We drove for a long time, over bumpy unsealed roads, and although once I had a breeze on my face I felt OK again, Dave had to ask the driver to stop so he could get out and throw up. Once we got to the cemetery he felt better, because of the fresh air and not having his stomach jolted. The pre-Inca mummies we saw at the cemetery were fascinating, and as you can see from the photos on our blog, a lot of them still have a lot of hair attached and clothing on them. The dry and hot climate means that they preserve particularly well; I've heard it only rains about once every ten years, and there is little wind. I think the remains go up to 2000 years old. Apparently nearby in the same desert there are known to be lots of other pre-Inca remains, but the Peruvian government doesn't have enough funds yet to have them all excavated. After this we all had lunch back in Nazca, and Dave and I did some shopping before going back to the hotel in a taxi. We played table tennis and went on the internet, but didn't have any dinner because since we'd had lunch very late, only and hour or two before, we weren't at all hungry.- comments
