15/12/08 In the morning we had to press on to Tennant Creek, but before this we popped into Katherine to stock up on fuel and drinks for the journey, buy some kangeroo steak to have for dinner, go into the internet cafe/art gallery (where Dave burnt all our photos from India and Southeast Asia onto DVDs) and walk along the high bridge across Katherine River - a different one to the bridge I had walked to the day before. On this bridge, you could look over and see a historic railway bridge opposite that is now out of use, and on one of the columns there were markers painted on it, going up in metres. Both bridges were very tall, and when I remembered a photo we'd seen in the museum of the flooded river only a couple of metres below this bridge in 1997, it seemed incredible that the the river could rise that much - about 30 metres if I remember correctly! No wonder the town was devastated by it, despite lying so high up from the river. About six hours later, we arrived in Tennant Creek. It was just about to start getting dusky, so while I put up the tent Dave cut the kangeroo steaks into chunks and fried them with chopped onion. It's delicious - kangeroo meat is very red and lean yet juicy, and very meaty in taste. We were both very tired, so we got an early night, though I took some photos of the sunset over the fence first. When it had got properly dark, we noticed that all the stars were out. It was an amazing sight, as the sky seemed absolutely packed with stars, far more so than in the northern hemisphere. Like in Katherine, Kakadu and Litchfield, we fell asleep to the sounds of flying foxes, birds and insects - and what I thought might be nocternal frogs.
