Cordoba is a highlight of Argentina as it famously has eleven universities in the city. This is enough of a tag line to get the attention of young and lively backpackers to stop by. The age demographic is instantly obvious when you are walking about the city streets. There is the magnificent Parroquia De La Asuncion Cathedral located right in central Cordoba. It is as impressive during the day as when it is lit up at night.
On my first day the the temperature peaked at a toasty 38 degrees. This was a strange spike even for the locals. As such, the slow pace of Argentinian life became even slower. However the good news is that I got to wear my hideous vest. A great purchase in Colombia if I may say so. Personally I have no issues with my vest but I can understand that they are not universally liked.
We decided to head to the huge Parque Sarmiento to enjoy the weather. Being Irish we sourced a football to keep us entertained. Plus the little bit of exercise would be no harm either. Not surprisingly the grass in the park was quite scorched and dusty hence a bit too rough for our delicate barefoot football dreams. The perfectly manicured adjacent university rugby pitch fit the bill so in under the fence we scampered. The dream lasted a total of about, oh, fifteen minutes before the security came over to move us on. Even when Jimmy declared 'We're Irish' in an attempt to save us the security man was not buying it. The jig was up, we had to leave. Still though, the security man was quite interested in the fact that we were tourists and wished us well on our travels.
Despite that, it was a great day as I was meeting up with some mates from home that I had not seen since June. It was nice to catch up and swap our stories about the successes and failures of our trip so far.
The next day with the temperature still making the mercury bubble we decided to head to another river beach. Clearly the Argies love the idea of river beaches. This one was a bit more difficult to get to as it was an hour and a half away on the bus. My feet did get a few cuts from scrambling over rocks. It was only after I crossed that I noticed a shallow bit that I could have easily waded through. Typical!
That night we headed out to see if the fuss about the great Cordoba nightlife lived up to it's name. As we are on a budget we had a few beverages in the hostel before heading out. A rule high up in 'Backpacking Life' is learn how to play cards. Strangely all the popular games are curse words so I'm not going to include them here. Cards are perfect for getting a group together and chatting before heading out. The nightlife was was good fun but was usual story to be honest (it was a Wednesday). The highlight for me was when a random girl face planted (landing face first onto the floor) after falling from her stool and when one of the guys walked into a glass door. He hit it so hard he left nose and lip smudges on the glass. No people were actually injured in the course of entertaining me.
Cordoba you gave me great weather, good food and most importantly you made me laugh with my friends. Someday ill be back around to visit!
