The harbour is on Banks Peninsula and is the location for cruise ships to anchor and tender passenger to shore for a 90 minute ground trip to Christchurch. There was a closer dock (Lyttleton) but it was damaged in the 2011 earthquake and has not been repaired to date. The Akaroa Harbour and Banks Peninsula have fantastic scenery.
