Day 68-80
After travelling for so long we thought we deserved a holiday. We wanted to be able to go to the beach, chillout and save money, so we headed to Port Douglas. Home to multi-million Dollar apartments.
Port Douglas was originally a fishing village although now it has many travellers visiting for their holidays. The famous Sheraton Mirage was built exactly for this purpose, it is the only resort along 4 Mile Beach. It has the largest swimming pool in the Southern Hemisphere and is where many celebrities stay. Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg stayed for 7 months whilst filming.
Due to this being a holiday we have not done a huge amount, below are some of our highlights;
- Al tearing open the outer shell of a coconut with a bottle lid.
- Mosquitos were as rife in the day as they were in the evening.
- Visiting the Sunday Markets which had some quirky things: funny faces made out of coconut, sugar cane juice whereby you had to pedal for your own drink, coconut slicing with masheties, organic fruit, clothing and airbrushing baseball caps.
- Playing hangman in the sand.
- Chilling by the pool.
- Our dares; Lorna's were barking when a pedestrian walked past and to stand in a hotel reception waterfall. Al's were to act like a monkey as a bus full of people drove past and to crouch over some excrement.
- Practising the famous Dirty Dancing scene in the pool.
- Standing on each other shoulders in the pool and jumping off.
- Watching a 2m Groper fish be eaten.
- Finding some food bargains and eating chilli on nachos, fish and thai curry.
- The cleaner called Lorna 'Beautiful Lorna'.
- A weirdo who turned up in his car at the hostel and slept in it all night. Al and Stewart were winding Lorna and Emily up about him coming to the room in the night.
- Planning our trip around New Zealand.
- Trying to light a candle nut on the beach.
- We were informed that the walk to the beach has Taipan snakes so you should ensure you have a torch, we didn't...ooppss!
Also whilst in Port Douglas Lorna recieved the bad news about Sue. John and Abigail our thoughts are with you. Rest in Peace Sue.
