Liz's Travels
Hey there people!!
Sorry I haven't updated for a few days...its been an adventure!! If you get bored easily I apologise for the long update!!
I left Airlie beach and got the overnight bus down to Hervey Bay, which is a pretty basic backpackers town with trips over to Frazer Island...so I went over there with Mark who I met from Magnetic Island and just chilled out...then i headed down to Rainbow beach.
Now Rainbow beach is absolutly gorgeous, very basic with a few cafes and a supermarket but the hostel was really chilled out and just had a good atmosphere! It was from here the real adventure started...
I was booked to do a 3 day camping and four wheel drive trip on Frazer Island, a huge sand Island, and so the first night we met our groups and signed up to drive...yes they were willing to let me loose on a four wheel drive with 10 terrified passengers! ha ha!! I had to swap groups as some Isralies wanted to be together so I ended up (typical me!) with just 2 other English girls, 7 French Canadian guys and an American guy...I can hear all the ladies going 'ooo lucky you Liz, 8 hot guys to be all strong and make your lives easy and provide good scenery'...and yes I can say that is what myself, Gemma and Nads did think......
So the next morning we all got up early (well 7am!) and were given all our equipment and food for the trip by a crazy but cool Canadian bloke and we loaded up the car...all was going well with the guys chipping in and showing off their muscles. Then we were given a quick talk on driving the thing, where to go, high tides etc etc. So off we went 'Team B' as we were to be known speeding into the distance with tunes blaring from our vehicle. Skye (the American guy) started off the driving and got us safely onto the island with only one heart stopping moment where we almost turned over!
At the first stop for lunch, it became clear us ladies were going to be in charge of the food...and rationing, bearing in mind we had 8 hungry guys when usually there are more girls in a group! We then drove to Lake MacKenzie which was stunning, clear and cool so we spent a good while chilling there before heading on to set up camp on the beach, which was needed after the crazy driving of Francois, one of the Canadians! So setting up camp wan't too bad...the guys did the tents while us ladies once again prepared dinner and everyone got stuck into the 30 + litres of Goon (cheap and rather harsh oz wine popular with us backpackers). We camped with another group and it turned into a pretty heavy night...
combine several Goon hangovers with an early morning and having to move on by 7am to beat the high tide and you don't get a group of hard working Canadians...no...you get a group of 3 English girls and the token American loading everything up (and believe me its hard work in the heat) before trying to round up the still drunk Canadians...still i suppose it was quite amusing!! We then headed up the beach to Indian Head where we would be stuck for a good 4 hours while high tide passed. On the way up there I was let loose behind the wheel and almost added to the Maheno ship wreck....hee hee! whoops, think they were reluctant to let me behind the wheel after that!
Anyway we spent the time at Indian Head walking to the view points, chilling out and cooking the guys breakfast. (surprise, surprise!!) The weather was soooo hot, and as the sea was full of sharks it wasn't too tempting to jump in! Anyway once high tide passed we headed back down, with another of the Canadians driving like a psycho, to the Maheno shipwreck and Eli Creek which provided much needed cool, refreshing water. Then we went to set up camp at an Aboriginal camp where, feeling guilty, the guys cooked us all a good dinner!!
The final day we went to Lake Wabby, which is a murkier but still refreshing lake that is dissapearing due to the sand. We had to walk about 2KM over sand dunes to get there which was hard work but incredible. After this it was back to the mainland to clean out the sand, which believe me, gets abosolutly everywhere!!!
All in all it was a good trip, if hard work, and we saw loads of dingos and other wildlife. I also met a couple who are moving to Melbourne, and Tom has assured me he will take me to an AFL game so I can see what all the fuss is about over here! (AFL is Australian Football League...a very very strange game...)
So back at the hostel we went to watch the sunset over yet more sand dunes and enjoyed some well deserved beverages!!
